Wall Lamp Hack You Can't Live Without

Writer's picture: Beke Design Beke Design

Without proper lighting, any space will feel poorly designed. Lighting is what gives a room feeling. But what do you do? No one wants to have to hire an electrician each time they want to hang a new wall lamp. The cost of that would be outrageous.

Don't worry- I've got the most amazing, simple solution you gotta try!

When my husband and I were in the market for a new home we weren't in a position to build, so we had to look for an existing home. We ended up purchasing a home which was built in 1967. We love our home, but we bought it knowing eventually we would have to update practically the whole thing. Adequate lighting was definitely one of the downfalls of our home and something I learned to conquer.

Ceiling lights apparently were not a thing for homes built in the 60's. I actually don't have a single ceiling light in any of my bedrooms or living spaces. Strangely enough, the only ceiling lights I had were in my closets, a florescent light over the kitchen sink, and a couple flush mount ceiling lights down the hall.

Hiring an electrician to come in and make all my lighting dreams come true was, and is not, an option. I adjusted for my lack of light with lots of lamps and thanks to Brooke Christen with Nesting with Grace, I found a way I can hang beautiful trendy wall lamps where ever I want-- without hiring a professional or even getting my husband involved.

This is the most genius decorating hack I think I have ever implemented in my home. These wall lamps are controlled with a remote and only powered with LED puck lights. I know.... Game. Changer.

Here's how you do it-

First, consider the type of light you need. Do you need to provide accent lighting or do you want to have more of a spotlight effect? This matters for the type of light you purchase. If you want to add a warm accent light to a space, get a light with a glass globe. Like this for example- (below)

For this type of application, I suggest getting an opaque shade so that you can't see the actual puck light. But that's totally up to you and your preference.

If you want a spotlight affect; a direct light shining down over artwork, over a locker unit in the mudroom or above the pantry in your kitchen- consider a gooseneck lamp. Most have metal shades and direct the light to only shine down.

In my post today- I wanted to add lighting above some artwork I have in my dining nook. I chose a metal shade gooseneck lamp that would shine directly down onto the canvas.

These are the lights I ordered (link here) and the puck lights. (link here) These puck lights are controlled by either a remote control or by manually pushing on them. The remote is absolutely worth getting if you want to hang the lights anywhere other than bedside. These also are a warm white LED which to me, is VERY important.

Here's how you do it!

The first step is to screw off the back plate that comes with the light. Attach it directly to the wall where you want the lamp to hang.

Then, on the back of the lamp where all the wires are- tuck the wires inside so they aren't in your way when you screw the lamp to the wall.

There are 2 holes pre-drilled on this lamp that slip right over top of the long screws on the back plate that I attached to the wall.

Slip the light on the screw pegs and add the decorative screw caps to keep the light in place.

That's it! Now your lights are hung!

Next step - give them light!

Take your puck light and put plenty of hot glue on the back of it, so that it gets a good seal.

Hold the light in place as the glue cools and that is it!

Beautiful new wall sconces!
