Halloween night. Five-year-old me really loved Halloween night. Was it the candy? Was it the costumes?
For me it was the decorated front porches. THAT is what I loved the most.
To this very day- I can recall exactly which houses along my trick-or-treat route set out the spooky lanterns along the sidewalks, hung haunting bats from the porch ceiling and had a wild and woolly werewolf (a dad) sitting in a chair at the end of the front porch that would suddenly come alive just as the witch (a mother) inside the door handed you some candy.
I dreamed of the house I would buy and how it would have a beautiful big front porch so that I could be the house all the kids had to come to on Halloween night.
The Halloween front porch I created here is quite possibly every trick-or-treaters dream come true. It is mine, anyways.
Break-down of the Design
It looks like a lot of work- but really it only took me about 20 minutes to set up!
Take a closer look!
Here is the porch before the spooky takeover.
This porch has great 'bones' with a beautiful black front door and sidelights, two grand white columns and a pendant light suspended from the ceiling. To give it a haunting (but inviting) look wouldn't be too hard.
My first goal was to soften it up. To do that - you add in textiles/fabrics. I hung dark green velvet drape panels on either side of the sidelights using these siding hooks (which are amazing and if you've not known about these until know- you're welcome), brought out a vintage tufted velvet armchair from inside, and laid a larger rug at the front door.
Next- I needed a special feature. Something to grab attention. For this I decided to set out a faux fireplace mantle which became the perfect spooky (and beautiful) piece to decorate around.
With the main pieces in place- the next step is adding in the accessories. For a Halloween front porch this means lanterns, buckets of candy, trick-or-treat signs and all the pumpkins and mums.
The last and final step to decorating is what I like to call "putting on the makeup".
The makeup on this Halloween front porch is the raven garland that is strung from one side to the other, the black tulle wrapped around the pumpkins and tied up with a bow, and not forgetting to light the black taper candles on the mantle.
Makeup is the last and final detail that completes the look.
You can only imagine all the wonder that fills this trick-or-treaters little mind as she walks up to ring the doorbell.
Trick or Treat!!
