Summer Porch

Updated: May 18, 2020

It's that time of year again! Time to set out the patio furniture, and spruce up the porch!

We have a pretty small front porch, but it's a porch nonetheless and I've found ways to make it work. If you have a cramped patio like mine- I hope this helps you see that even in a small space, you can add lots of character and functionality.

Seating and Pillows-

As I mentioned, we have a pretty small front porch and I've tried several different configurations with furniture over the last few years. I sold my clunkier patio furniture in a garage sale last year and decided to try these lightweight stack-able patio chairs instead. I have found I really enjoy not having big bulky furniture that basically stays put. Instead, we can move these seats around depending on how we want to use the patio at any given time.

Because the chairs are a little "weak" in substance, I needed to add bold pillows. I went with an 18" x 18" buffalo check pillow and a 12" x 20" lumbar pillow with tassels. Visually this solidifies the spindly chairs so they don't get lost on the porch.

But these covers are not outdoor covers! Won't they get ruined? Nope! Here's what I do. I take my covers and spray this waterproofing product all over them. Once it's dry- I slip an outdoor pillow inside of it!

The Floor-

I love the look of tile on a patio, but I don't love the cost. I decided to buy a stencil and just paint the tile onto the cement pad instead. Long-term commitment to a pattern was making me nervous (and my very no-frills husband wasn't sure he was crazy about a pretty little pattern permanently painted onto the concrete either) so I used chalk! Chalk paint was quick and easy, and it didn't come with any commitment remorse.

Decor-

My favorite item on the entire front porch is my little wall planter. The terracotta pot came with an iron mounting bracket and I hung it under our mailbox. What a great way to get a plant up off the floor without compromising floor space by using a plant stand!

My next favorite item is the market bag hanging on the front door. My front door.....I don't like. We will be replacing it eventually, but in the meantime, that means I gotta make it work. So I hung an over-sized bag in front of it to hide as much of the door as possible. Pretty cute!

We're a very patriotic family and I love to incorporate red, white and blue onto my patio each summer. This year, I hung this beautiful American flag and flanked it with these battery operated lanterns. The lanterns are set on a timer and they stay lit for 6 hours each evening. They turn on and off without me having to worry about them. I really like the timer feature, and I love the added warmth the candles give the patio each evening.

Here's a bigger look-
