Have you ever wondered what the difference is between an interior designer and an interior decorator? Maybe you did not even know there was a difference. In this blog, we are going to discuss the differences between the two worlds.
QUICK EXPLANATION
According to Google "Interior design is the art and science of understanding people's behavior to create functional spaces within a building, while interior decorating is the furnishing or adorning of a space with decorative elements to achieve a certain aesthetic. In short, interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design."
BREAK DOWN
As someone who has gone to school to be an interior designer, it comes with a responsibility to educate people and even clients about the real notion of our job. A lot of people assume that when you say you are an Interior Design student you are going to school to pick out paint and material colors and along with this comes the famous phrase "you can come and redo my house" followed by the awkward "haha...yeah..." The reality of that conversation is a little disappointing as it is obvious that people are not truly aware of my capabilities as a designer.
When you study to be an interior designer think...architect or construction...you are learning how to build the inside of the space. And there is a lot more that goes into that than decorating.
Walk into any space and look at the area. Analyze the floor, the wall shape, the window placement, and the function of each room... I'll let you in on a little secret...an interior designer designed all of it.
Now do not get me wrong, every designer loves a little decorating job where we don't have to focus on space planning or materials but it is not always the focus of our job, we are capable of so much more!
So next time you think you want to expand on your house, build a she-shed, house etc. Consider contacting an interior designer...you'll be working with one at some point anyway:)
The following picture is a project poster done in a university classroom. The poster shows a bubble diagram, space plan, furniture, ceiling, and electrical plan along with 2 elevations and 2 sections.
The 2 bottom pictures are renderings of the space, showing a 3-D representation of what the space would look like.
