Coat Closet Conversion

Do you have a coat closet that doesn't actually function as a place guests hang their jackets? Take off the door(s) and convert that space into a drop zone! That's exactly what we did in this foyer. Check out how functional and beautiful this closet became.

This space used to be a clutter-catcher hidden behind two doors. The coat closet was used to accumulate extra "stuff" along with a clothes rod where a couple empty hangers waited for guests to hang their jackets.

The problem was- guests never actually opened the closet doors to hang their coats on the hangers. We found most people just don't feel comfortable opening the doors and ended up throwing their jackets on the bed in the guest room, or on the bench down the hallway instead!

Having a place to sit down to take on/off shoes in the foyer was something else we were lacking. With only the closet in the foyer, we had no wall space to set a bench so seating was never an option.

We have always loved the idea of having a drop zone and thought- if we took off the closet doors, cleared out the un-needed "stuff" inside, and put in a bench with a couple hooks...we could have a drop zone right here in the foyer! It would become a multi-functional space for guests to use and it would be a cute design feature for the foyer.

Now, as guests walk in the front door, they know exactly what to do with their items. The bench is there to sit down on and take off/on their shoes, and hooks are there to hang up a jacket or purse.

Our guests (and ourselves) began using the space right away. It is so much more functional than the closet and it has given the foyer a very welcoming feel.
